NASA is planning to send mars 2020 rover named perseverance to mars in the month of aug 2020. The main theme of this mission is to collect rock samples and to seek signs of ancient life and possible return to earth. it will launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. it is expected to land on feb 2021. and it will land on Jezero Crater, Mars. the mission duration is about one martian year about 687 earth days.
it is designed in such a way to better understanding of mars environment and seek life of ancient life. it will collect the rock samples and soil and return to earth in futurn. It will also test new technology to benefit future robotic and human exploration of Mars.
The Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE)
is one of the instrument that perseverance is going to carry mars. lets talk more about this.
it will able to convert mars atmospheric carbon di oxide to a small amount of oxygen but it not enough for a human being. if this technology works fine then we can produce oxygen to astronauts in mars and it servers fuel as well.
MOXIE is a gold box, it is going to mount carefully inside perseverance. since, the martian atmosphere mostly (95%)
c02 it convert the co2 into pure form of oxygen which human can breath and it can be used a fuel. but the problem is we cannot produce large amount of oxygen using MOXIE well it sufficient for a small lizard. In addition to this MOXIE cannot work all the time because perseverance will need to conserve charge for the wok of other essential instruments. it will work by taking advantage of solid oxide electrolysis to rip an oxygen atom away from existing carbon dioxide molecules, resulting in carbon monoxide, oxygen, and other byproducts.
if the technology success it leads us a great way to colonize on mars.
